PROJECT
8-ft dingy
LOCATION
Sarasota, Florida
DESIGNER
L. Francis Herrshoff
COMPLETION
1973
COMMENTS
I wanted to build a Herrshoff but all I had was a carport. Having poured over L. Frances Sensible Cruising I picked the dingy for Marco Polo. But at this early age I lacked the skill to build to his lapstrake building plans so I converted the construction to strip planked composite. A crude early project I was functional and lovely none the same.
FOOTNOTE
These punt bowed dingies, of which there were many (Boston Whaler built one for years,) all suffered from little to no buoyancy forward. Worse yet the wide squared bow encouraged boarders to think they could step into the boat up forward - bad idea. It was this characteristic that helped shape the bow on my design (see Courier.)
